BLURB

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward comes a new, STANDALONE contemporary romance…

When my best friend Taylor gifted me a vacation at a resort owned by his grandparents, the last thing I expected was to bond with a man seventeen years older.
Tate was also vacationing alone.
He’d come to Midnight Key to clear his head and reevaluate his life.
I’d come to get over my high school sweetheart who’d dumped me.
I’d spotted the brawny, tattooed Adonis in the lobby on the first day and thought he had to be someone’s hot dad.
But then we matched on an app that paired single men and women by proximity.
The problem was? At nineteen—almost twenty—I’d lied and said I was twenty-nine.
Tate outed me on our first date, and I fessed up to my real age.
But we continued to run into each other.
And eventually we found our connection was too magnetic to deny.
While we agreed to only use first names and to part ways at the end of the trip, I’d really fallen for Tate.
I never forgot him and knew he was the one who got away.
Remember that guy friend who gifted me the trip?
Well, four years later, Taylor got married.
He’d been estranged from his dad for years, though recently they’d reconnected.
What I didn’t know was that the man I’d had that torrid affair with at the resort would be standing next to Taylor in the receiving line.
My dream man Tate? Was Taylor’s father.

The next morning, I woke up happier than I’d been in a long time.
The prospect of seeing Tate again filled me with anticipation. It was a wonder I’d gotten any sleep.
His words from last night still replayed in my head over and over.
“A responsible person wouldn’t be struggling with whether to protect you or eat you.”
God, I hoped he ultimately chose the latter.
We hadn’t even exchanged phone numbers, so I was pleased to see a message come through the dating app from him.

Tate: I’m heading down to breakfast in a few. Care to join me?

Blair: Only if you order me four different kinds of beverages to choose from. BTW, it’s never too early for an espresso martini.

Tate: You’re about two years too early.

I laughed as I typed.

Blair: Very funny.

Tate: See you in a few?

Blair: Maybe…

Tate: Brat.

Blair: You like that about me.

Tate: You’re not wrong.

My mouth hurt from smiling.
When I got downstairs, I saw Tate before he saw me. He sat at a table with a huge pile of food spread before him. How did this man look even more hot today? He wore his baseball hat backward, which was absolutely my weakness. The way pieces of his hair poked out the sides? Scrumptious. Every look he’d rocked was sexier than the last.
I walked over to where he was sitting. “Hey, you.”
He gave me a once-over, and his eyes filled with something that seemed a hell of a lot like desire as he appraised the floral sundress I wore, the top of which was held up by two skimpy strings. My current look wasn’t as dramatic as last night’s, though. Today I had gone for fresh-faced and sassy.
“Well, hello.” He smiled. “How did you sleep?”
“Like a baby…”
“You’d better not.” I took the seat across from him. “How did you sleep?”
“Best sleep I’ve had in a while, actually.”
“Must have been the company you kept the night before.”
“I did have an amazing time with you last night.” Tate smiled.
He seemed genuine, and I felt myself blush. “Likewise.” I gestured to the food. “Hungry much?”
There were eggs, bacon, a huge stack of pancakes, home fries, and fruit.
“All of this is for both of us. Have you seen that buffet line? I waited for like twenty minutes. Didn’t want you to have to do the same.”
“Well, I guess I win for being fashionably late. Thank you.” I grinned. “Between the variety of drinks the first time we met and this private buffet, I’m starting to think this is your thing—hoarding food.”
He gestured to the plates. “Eat up.”
How I wish I could.
For some reason, I wasn’t all that hungry—at least for food. But it was amusing to watch this big, strong man devour his breakfast.
“What are your plans today?” I asked as he munched.
“Depends on whether a certain girl wants to hang out with me.”
“I wasn’t gonna be presumptuous. You’re the one who’s been resistant.”
“Only to certain things and for your own good,” he clarified. “I’m not resistant to your company in the least. I quite like it.”
“So what’s another safe activity we can do so you don’t have to feel like a creeper?”
Tate stopped chewing for a moment. “I was thinking maybe we could go kayaking, if you’re up for it.”
My mouth curved into a smile. “I would love that, actually.”
In truth, I could take or leave kayaking. But any activity where I’d be in close proximity to Tate today was fine by me.
“Cool. I already booked it.”
“Now you’re the one being presumptuous.”
“Maybe, yeah.” He winked before stuffing a big piece of pancake into his mouth.
Never thought I could be jealous of a pancake, but here we were.
I reached my fork across the table and began eating off his plate. As I leaned forward, I accidentally rested my foot on top of his at one point. To my surprise, he didn’t move it away. The contact sent a rush of desire through me.
I popped a piece of pineapple into my mouth. “Do anything interesting when you got back to your room last night?”
“Not particularly.” He chewed.
“After what you said about contemplating eating me, I think you might be lying.”
He stopped mid-bite and shook his head. “Even if I did do what you’re implying, I wouldn’t admit it.”
“I’m pretty sure you just did.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Your face is red. You’re fidgeting. The signs are all there.”
I strategically selected a banana, holding it firmly in my hand as I slowly peeled it and took a big bite. Tate’s eyes remained fixed on me the entire time. “It was the only way I could sleep,” I added.
He nearly choked on his coffee.
“What you said riled me up,” I told him.
“Some things can remain private.” He glared. “You know?”
“So, you don’t want to know about my soothing Epsom salt foot soak?”
Tate reached across the table, grabbed my banana, and took a frustrated bite.

EXCERPT
Weariness settles in my bones and I sigh. I’m just so tired of pretending. It’s not too much to ask. I wanted to go somewhere to escape the reputation of our last name for a while. Where nobody knows me. But now, I’m trapped on a plane with my brother’s best friend and he won’t even speak to me.

I don’t know what it is about Colton that grates on my nerves. Maybe it’s the fact I can never get a reaction from him. At this point, I just want to see him falter.

“I’m horny.” My voice is a purr as I sprawl out on the couch. “Let’s join the Mile High Club.”

Colton’s blue eyes clash into mine. Static crackles between us as he watches me. He’s completely still. I’m not sure if he’s even breathing.

Laughter bursts free from my successful strategy. “Oh, that’s what it takes? You’re totally busted, Cowboy.”

The heat in his smolder fizzles into a glare. “Brat.”

I recoil. “Excuse you?”

Colton’s nostrils flare from a heavy exhale. “You’re a spoiled brat, Princess.”

Fire smacks my cheeks. “And you’re a rude asshole.”

He shrugs. “Just doin’ my job.”

My jaw drops. This is the most he’s talked to me in the five years I’ve known him. I’m not sure where to go from here.

“You could be a bit more understanding,” I mutter.

“That’s not what I’m getting paid for.”

“Ohhhhh,” I breathe. “This is all about money. Got it.”

His jaw clenches. “No, this is about keeping you safe.”

“I don’t need you to protect me.”

“That’s not your decision.” His smug expression sends a hot spike of irritation through me.

My eyes abandon his unwavering focus for the sake of my pride. “It’s probably best if we don’t talk anymore.”

Colton braces his inked arms along the back of the sofa. “I give it two minutes. Max.”

I clamp my lips tight to prove him wrong, but the tickle in my throat is prepared to do the opposite.

This is going to be a long-ass trip.

“How about we discuss this somewhere more private? I have a table reserved in that dark corner.” My thumb hitches in the general direction.

“I’m not going anywhere with you.” Paisley plants her boots into the concrete floor for emphasis.

“You’d rather get more intimate where everyone can see?” I step forward until our bodies nearly brush. “Fine by me.”

Her breath hitches at our proximity. She glances from left to right, most likely noticing the attention we’re gathering. “What are you doing?”

“Setting the mood.”

Baby blues widen at me. “You’re making a scene.”

“Then put an end to it,” I urge.

Her unblinking gaze narrows into a glare. “You’re doing this on purpose.”

I shrug. “Let them talk.” Maybe the rumor mill will be somewhat useful tonight after all.

“Nope, you’re not using me as a pawn.” Paisley shoos me toward the door. “Buh-bye.”

I loop an arm around her waist, tugging until she’s flush against me. “I’m not leaving without you, Twinkles.”

Her palms press flat on my chest, ready to shove me away. The slight curl in her fingertips is the only sign of hesitation. Our eyes lock and hold. One breath extends into two. Her body presses closer to mine with every ragged exhale. The buzz around us goes quiet. I search her gaze while she gets lost in mine. My heartbeat quickens under her touch. Warmth spreads between us.

The urge to pull her even tighter against me flexes my arm. Paisley blinks, casting her gaze around the crowded room. Red blooms on her cheeks and she breaks free from my hold. I release her but my eyes remain glued on her fiery blush. There’s no hiding her reaction.

“You’re playing dirty,” she mutters.

“Whatever makes you mine.”

“Never gonna happen.”

“No?” In a fluid motion, I remove my cowboy hat and put it on her head. A collective gasp ripples across the bar. I smirk as the gossips prepare to do their thing. “The town will say otherwise.”

“There’s nothing fake about the way you’re reacting, the way your breath is hitching, the way your eyes try to avoid mine because you know if you look at me, you’ll be tempted. You want me, Everly. You just wish that you didn’t.”

Not sure how pushing her buttons is going to pay off, but she’s still on my lap and despite my loosened grip, she hasn’t attempted to stand or walk away.

After a few short seconds, she finally says, “You were a decent f*&k, Hardy. That’s all it will ever be.”

Not going to lie and say that didn’t sting, but I also am well aware of the wall she’s erected between us—the one protecting her from getting hurt one more time—that means she’ll say and do anything to keep me at a distance. It’s my job to tear down that wall brick by brick, until I reach the point where I can tell her what Haisley said. Until then I will use any means necessary to woo her.

“Just decent?” I say. “Hmm, interesting, because you came back for seconds.”

“Because you didn’t satisfy me the first time,” she says. “Thought that maybe I could try again.”

I chuckle—the lie is so ridiculous, it’s the only reaction I can muster.

“Uh-huh, and what happened that second time?” I ask.

She shrugs. “Like I said, decent.” And then she turns away from me so her back is to my chest. I take that moment to place my hand on her stomach and pull her back against me. I wait for her to try to lift off my lap because I would let her. I would let her get up. I’m not about to hold her back against her will, but when she doesn’t make the attempt, I know I’ve got her.

She might have erected that wall as high as she can make it, but she can’t deny the fact that she still wants me. That she feels the attraction pulsing between us and wants to indulge.

And if that’s the way to get her to talk, then that’s what is going to have to happen.

“Maybe I need to prove to you that I’m more than decent,” I say as I move my other hand down her leg, to the hem of her dress and then slip it under. I pause, waiting for her to stop me, but she doesn’t. So, I drag my hand up farther, pulling the tight hem with me until it’s up and around her waist. I run my hand over her inner thigh, letting my thumb drag over the seam of her underwear. That elicits a small, almost silent gasp from her.

“Say the word, Everly, and I’ll stop,” I whisper.

But she doesn’t.

Blurb

Colby McNichols, otherwise known as the baby-faced assassin, is the left wing for the Western Wildcats hockey team. All he has to do is sign his name on the dotted line and he’ll play for the pros after his senior season. What I’ve heard from the girls on campus, who aren’t shy about spilling the tea, is that he’s totally earned his reputation.

And then some.

It’s just one of the reasons I choose to steer clear.

Trust me when I say that my life is complicated enough without getting tangled up with a player.

For reasons I can’t fathom, Colby has decided to insert himself in my life. Everywhere I go, there he is. Which makes holding him at a distance nearly impossible. He might be smoking hot but there’s zero point in starting something with this guy. Especially since I can’t be honest about who I am.

Unfortunately, a weekend spent in Vegas changes everything.

Turns out that our friends weren’t the only ones who tied the knot in Sin City.

I can only hope that what they say is true—what happens in Vegas stays there.

Because if it doesn’t…

I’m screwed.

And not in a good way.

What to expect:

💍enemies to lovers

🏒reality star in hiding

💍Vegas wedding

🏒secret relationship

💍obsessed hero

🏒forced proximity

EXCERPT

When she steps closer, swallowing up the distance between us, my breath hitches as anticipation leaps to life in my veins before flooding my system.

What the actual f*ck is that about?

My breath has never hitched once in my life.

Not even before stepping onto the ice for a championship game.

I glance at her lips.  They’re plump and shiny.  But not oversized like the blonde sorority chicks who were trying to have their wicked way with me.

It takes effort to force my gaze back to hers, where it stays fastened.  There’s an intensity within her golden depths that makes me feel like I’m drowning.

It’s the strangest sensation.

One I don’t understand.

She tilts her chin to maintain eye contact.  “Spoiler alert—I’m not going to sleep with you.”

That’s unfortunate.

“You sure about that?” I rasp.

She presses close enough for me to feel the softness of her breasts through the thin sweater she’s wearing.  I can’t help but flex my chest, desperate for more contact.

“Yeah, I am.  I will never sleep with you.”  Seconds tick by as she carefully searches my gaze.

“The girls that were just hanging all over you are the ones you should take home.”

The edges of my lips quirk upwards.  “Ahhh…so you were watching.  Good to know.”

She snorts.  “My point is that they would be easy.  More your speed.  You should stick with that.”

“Maybe I don’t want easy,” I blurt.

The throaty chuckle that escapes from her breaks the thick tension building between us.

“Of course you do.  You like the thrill of the chase.”

Her smile is like a gut punch.

When I remain silent, unsure what to say, she continues.  “Please.  Easy is what you’re used to.”

“Interesting.  I didn’t realize we knew each other so well.”

“I don’t have to know you personally to know your type.  I’ve seen it a million times before.

Trust me when I say that I’m not what you’re looking for.”

Before I can fire back another response, she says, “I was just about to take off.  But it was nice not meeting you.”  She cocks her head.  “Let’s keep it that way, shall we?”

I…

Have no words.

I’m pretty sure that my mouth is gaping wide like a small mouth bass.

With that, she takes a step in retreat.  Air rushes between us, making me miss the warmth of her smaller body pressed against mine.

It’s only when she swings away and is no longer staring at me that I find my tongue.  “Never say never, firecracker.”
