This month I made the mistake of over committing on book reviews, what I didn't take in to account was the awesome books being released and the group challenges I had committed to. But I got a small gap and couldn't help but read the last letter by Rebecca Yarros and when I put that down in a big puddle of tears I knew I needed something fun and uplifting. So I jumped on GoodReads and this popped up in my feed.

And when I went to the kindle store it popped up again in KU so I took that as the sign from the universe and played hooky from my commitments because that blurb sounded like everything I could want. And honestly it was great. The perfect pick me up. But it wasn't completely what I expected, although luckily for me it was better.

Both characters were great and I really loved that there was so much history between them that gave their relationship so much depth and background. There was a lot of emotion and genuinely great story writing for a book with laugh out loud moments.

The background characters added so much to the whole thing as well and I am now dying for the release of the next one. And my curiosity has me dying to know what Beck wrote in that damn tweet. I am absolutely kicking myself that I didn't already sign up for it.

I have wanted to read this series since I picked up my first Kylie Scott book but I am not a massive fan of rockstar romance. I don’t know why not I used to love them so even though I knew I would love them I just seem to have a mental block on picking them up. Then I read Play and loved it and I already knew I liked Mal so I thought I would jump straight into Lick so I one clicked it and then it sat on my kindle for months.

And the annoying thing is everyone told me how much I would love it, I knew I would love it yet I let it grow dust bunnies. So when I got it as part of a challenge I finally picked it up and by the end of the first chapter I was so hooked.

Anne was perfection. I really loved her so hard. She was so caring and giving and even though she was all fan girl over Mal she didn’t let him walk all over her. And man I can completely understand going fangirl over Mal.

Mal was like an overgrown puppy. He just bounced right on in there without thinking and didn’t think past what he was chasing after at the time. He was super sweet but he was also super clueless. Luckily that combination worked for him and it helped that he was hot as hell and owned his fuck ups.

And of course I loved seeing the stage dive crew and I am seriously looking forward to when I finally get around to the next book in the series.

Now, he’s facing the most important, and the hardest fight he’s ever fought… the battle to win Orley’s damaged heart.

She wasn’t the perfect daughter. Or student. Or girlfriend.

EXCERPT
~ORLEY~
The nearly naked man in front of me stretched his arms over his head and I couldn’t look away from the ripple and flex of his clearly defined abs. His body was ridiculous in all the right ways. I’d never seen a man in person who looked like he did. He was like one of those irrationally, unrealistically hot Instagram guys, but one who was standing in front of me in all his muscly, sweaty glory. I knew somewhere in the back of my head he was dangerous, and I shouldn’t be so nonchalant about chatting him up, but I figured I owed him the common courtesy I bypassed the night before. One thing I had left was flawless manners.
He cocked his head to the side and asked, “If yesterday was the second worst day, how did you survive the first one?”
That wasn’t a day I ever talked about. It was the day that changed everything. The only reason I survived the day was because I had to for the little girl clutching my hand and watching the stranger with wide, curious eyes. I blew out a breath and changed the subject as quickly as possible.
“You ever have one of those days where it’s one thing after another and it feels like the universe is trying to tell you something? Trying to tell you to give up?” I shrugged before he could answer me. “My car broke down. My babysitter quit. My job cut my hours. The icing on the cake was getting attacked on the way home. Like I said, it was a bad day, but that doesn’t excuse me running off without thanking you properly. I owe you more than I can every repay.” I couldn’t think about what might have happened if he hadn’t shown up. My mind wouldn’t allow it.
He dipped his chin again. “No worries. I happened to be in the right place at the right time.” He moved to put the earbuds back in and I considered myself dismissed, but before he could block out the sound, the homeless man on the stoop roused himself into a sitting position and pointed a finger at the man looming in front of me.
“Go help the girl with her car, Solo.” His finger wavered but his voice was surprisingly clear as he issued the order.
Noble bounded up on her toes and tilted her head to the side. “Solo?” My kid was obsessed with Star Wars so there was no way she was going to miss the unusual name.
The man looked down at my daughter, and finally, a grin cracked the stern expression chiseled on his ruggedly handsome face. “Solomon. Solo is my nickname.”
Before I could stop her, she stuck out her hand for the big man to shake. I gulped when her tiny hand disappeared in his much larger one. “I’m Noble.”
He nodded at her. “That’s a pretty name.”
His head moved in my direction and I bit back a sigh. “Orley.” I tossed out my own name reluctantly. “And don’t worry about the car. We’ll figure it out. Seriously.” I wasn’t sure I wanted to spend any more time in his company. He made me feel weird and unsteady. There was a low vibration I could feel humming throughout my body standing this close to him, and I had no time for any kind of distraction.

So I propose a roommate agreement. One that will bring peace and order back to my life, complete with rules that might just stop my newfound crush on my best friend in its tracks.

Shelby shut the door with a click and peered over at me. “What are you writing? If it’s permission to use the feather duster as a sex toy, the answer is no. Unless you buy your own, but if you haven’t figured out where the laundry room is yet, I doubt you’ll find where to buy one.”

She was as funny as a car crash, this one.

“Hilarious,” I drawled. “No, I’m making amendments as I go. I added a new rule.”

“You added a new rule?” She raised one dark eyebrow and walked over, hovering over me. “All right, what is it?”

“Decent clothes must be worn. Do you know how many times I wake up early on a morning to open the gym and find you basically in your underwear in the kitchen?”

“Basically in my underwear? Who are you seeing in the kitchen? I wear shorts and a tank top at the very least.”

“Yes, but the shorts barely cover your ass, and you’re sure as hell not wearing a bra.”

She paused, eyes glittering as she said, “And why are you looking at my ass and my boobs?”

That was an excellent question.

“Because there’s nowhere else to look!” I rushed out before my stupid cock could get any ideas. “Look, waking up in the morning can be challenging for a guy.”

She stared at me.

“I don’t need to get up for a coffee with… you know.” I motioned to my groin. “And see you half-clothed.”

She flicked her hair over her shoulder and walked to the kitchen, turning her back to me. “Why does it matter? I’m your best friend. I hardly think your little friend is remotely interested in whether or not I’m wearing a bra.”

Yeah, well, he is.

“Fine. If I have to wake up and see your perky nipples prancing around the kitchen, I’m going to stroll around in my underwear so you can get a good view of my morning glory.”

She spun, lifting up a finger. Her cheeks were flushed, and she had to swallow before she could speak. “My nipples do not prance. They are not horses.”

I grinned.

“Also, I have no desire to have anything to do with your morning erection, much less get a good view of it, thank you very much.”

“Have I told you that you’re cute when you blush?”

“Have I told you that you’d be a cute dead guy?”

I laughed, leaning back on the sofa. “C’mon, Shelbs. We need to respect each other’s privacy. You don’t want to see my cock hard over your breakfast, and I don’t want to see your nipples standing to attention when I make a coffee.”

She sighed. “Why did I ever let you move in again?”

“Because I was going to be homeless and you’re the best friend ever?”

“Mm.”

I am such a temperamental reader that I can never just sit down and read a book.  I have to be in the mood for that particular book or theme and if it's part of a series I can't start it unless I know I will have the time to read them all. The flip side of the issue is if I get hooked and love a series then have to wait ages for the next book I find it really hard to pick up the series again.

I read so much that six months between books could be 50 to 100 books so I tend to forget who everyone is and how they connect. I just know I loved that series and a vague sense of familiarity. In the case of this series it's been 3 and a half years so I kept putting it off.

Now before I actually comment on the book I will say I still didn't really want to read it right now. But I signed up for a challenge and this was the one of four that caught my eye. And it took me maybe half the book to get invested. But I know it wasn't any fault of the books.

So after I started reading the book I realised that it really wasn't going how I expected it to from the blurb. In fact I went back to GoodReads to make sure I was reading the correct book. I was. Just I had an idea of what I was going to get and it didn't happen.

Once I got over that and just enjoyed the words on the page I really liked Chester and Finn. They had such great banter and I really liked watching them fall in like as much as seeing them realise they had fallen in love.

And even though I honestly don't remember a thing about the series other than how much I truly loved it I am so glad I went back and read this. Although hopefully the next book comes out soon and it doesn't take me another three years to get there.

Title: The Panty Melter
Author: Lili Valente
Genre: Contemporary Romance/Enemies-to-Lovers
Release Date: March 26, 2019

Blurb

I don’t date alpha males.
Especially not alpha males with egos the size of Jupiter, who also happen to be my boss’s big brother.

Deacon Hunter is domineering. Condescending. Infuriating.

And yet I can’t seem to keep my panties on for five minutes when we’re alone together.

He keeps melting them right off. With that sexy voice, those confident hands, the way he brings my body wildly to life, he’s proved my libido hasn’t gone into permanent, post-divorce hibernation after all.

Surely there’s no harm in being enemies with benefits… Right?

***
When Violet Boden asks me to take her Divorce Virginity, the only thing I can think is—come again?

No, seriously, come again.

And again and again, until both of us are so satisfied we can’t remember the people who did us wrong.

Best if we keep conversation to a minimum, though, considering I drive her crazy. She drives me crazy sometimes, too. But she’s also sweet, loyal, fearless, and so much fun she’s making it damn hard not to fall for her.

But how to convince a woman who’s put me in the emotional no-fly zone that I deserve a place in her heart?

Oh my god I am such an idiot. Why don't I ever read the book information for these books before my grabby hands get me in trouble? So I just realised that this is book 4 in a series. And obviously not being aware of that I haven't read the previous books except for the first one, which I really enjoyed and was what got me hooked on this author in the first place. But damn I hope this can be read as a standalone.

Ok crisis averted this is a great standalone and even though I have gone back and added the other two to the TBR mountain I am relieved I haven't missed anything story altering. Also with my goldfish memory I will be alright.

Now back to this book. So for the first 50 percent there was a lot of smoking hot chemistry followed by a lot of steamy encounters and I was fully on board for it just to be a whole heap more of that. In fact I was really enjoying it. Both characters were really likable and the few secondary characters were good value.

But then bam major plot twist and story line and my I will just read a few chapters to help me sleep became a can't put it down until I see how it all plays out. And I was kind of a little judgey when I first finished thinking it was a little unrealistic until I realised I am kinda living part of that. And so as not to ruin it for you I am going to let you find out for yourself. Your welcome.

So yeah overall this was a fun book with loads of chemistry and laughs that still managed to have a fairly decent story without being wickedly long. It ticks a heap of my boxes. And now I have to Google WTF salamanders are. Oh and I really have to say that although the cover is smoking hot and I love it, it really doesn't work with the characters maturity.

That inked bad boy who’s been flirting hard with me since he rode into town? Turns out he’s my new housemate, which is one hell of a problem since our chemistry is so hot it should be illegal.

I have a fantastic family, great best friends, a job I love…and now I’m up for a promotion to police sergeant. I need total focus—not a flirty, dirty, irresistible, tattooed hottie riding into my town on his motorcycle. Can I arrest him for being too good-looking? When he kisses me senseless in the back of a waffle truck, it’s criminal, the things he makes me think about hot syrup and melted butter. One order of hot, fluffy hookup to go, please.
But the next time I see him, it’s not for our date with benefits. He’s the guy who just rented the room above my garage. I need the rent to pay my bills, not a man like Derek, who I soon discover to be strong, caring, generous, good with kids, and kind to puppies… If I’m not careful, he’ll be moving into my heart as well as my house.

***

A no-strings-attached fling with the fiery redhead who revs my engine? Why, yes, that does sound like a delicious perk of my new job in this new town, thank you very much. I’m coming off a bad relationship, and I have zero interest in anything serious. I’ve got all the serious I need helping my sister take care of her three little kids while her husband is deployed.
Except, surprise! Perri isn’t just my future fling. Turns out she’s my sexy, sassy landlord.
A lease definitely counts as “strings attached,” and as much as I’d like to get tangled in her sheets, I can’t let myself get tangled up in a relationship.
But as soon as we put the cuffs on our escapades, I learn over late-night conversations in the kitchen, that my landlord is so much more than the sexiest woman I’ve ever met– she has a quick mind and the biggest heart.
Once I’m in, I’m all in. And to convince her that we should see where this goes, I plan on turning up the heat—and not just in the kitchen.

~DEREK~
Today is my lucky day.
I’d like to thank my sister for getting my ass out of bed.
I’d like to thank my niece for telling me the nice lady with the paints had just made her way down the veggie aisle.
And I’d like to thank fate that this avocado stand is in an out-of-the-way corner of the market, and that the farmer running it must have had to take one hell of a leak.
It’s just us.
This woman is fiery, flirty, and already driving me out of my mind. The stream of market-goers has thinned to a crawl as we near closing time, and left us in a cocoon of raw lust.
I place the fruit on the red-and-white-checkered tablecloth, brush my fingers over her hip, and tug her against me. She lets out the sexiest little sound. “Tell me your name. I’m dying to know.”
“Why do you need it so badly?”
“So I know what name to say when I’m fantasizing.”
A murmur crosses her lips, and she leans her head back against me, her hair spilling down my chest. “Are you fantasizing about me?”
“Every. Single. Night.”
“You must be having a log of long nights, Mr. Trouble.”
“Long, hard nights…Miss Demeanor,” I say with a smirk, trying that nickname on for size.
“Well played.”
“Thank you. It just came to me.”
She glances back at me, her green eyes looking rife with dirty thoughts. “Do you want to come down to the station with me?”
“I want your name, beautiful. Give me your name,” I growl into her ear, commanding her.
“Perri,” she says breathlessly, her voice betraying her longing. A longing that matches mine.
“Perri,” I repeat, tasting her name on my tongue.
Her voice tightens to a warning and sharpens as she speaks. “Don’t say it.”
I narrow my brow in question. “Say what?”
“Don’t say it’s a guy’s name.”
I laugh lightly in her ear, jerking her ass closer to my hard-on. “Do you honestly believe I’m thinking for one second about guys right now?”
She lets out a gasp, chased by a soft moan. “I don’t know. What exactly are you thinking about?”
I drag my scruff against her neck. “How close I am to getting a ticket for indecent everything.”
She wriggles her sexy rear against me. “I’d say everything feel way more than decent.”
I groan as a dart of lust shoots down my spine. I’d like to find a way to kiss the breath out of her right here, right now.
She tenses against me, her body straightening like a ruler, and my gaze flicks to the new crowd of people streaming around the corner, heading toward us.
Fuck me.

Every now and then I read a book that I just can't review. And this book is the absolute example of that. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone but mainly I just don't have the words to describe it other than to say it was heartbreaking perfection.

Obviously if you have read other books by Rebecca Yarros you know that heartbreak is to be expected. So I went into this with my eyes wide open. In fact I have been dying for this book for what feels like years and I preordered it and waited until I had nothing else to distract me from it.

And once I started I was so lost in the story and wrapped up in Beckett and Ella and Colt and Maisie and Havoc until I put it down surrounded by tissues. And even though I cried huge ugly tears I loved every perfect word in it. Now I just have to pull myself together enough to adult.

While the kids were held captive by one of the men donning a heavy tan fire suit, Ali felt someone come stand beside her. She glanced to her right and found Kellen. He seemed much bigger, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with her, than he had the other day. Ali wouldn’t consider herself short, and he still had at least six inches on her.

“You doin’ okay?” he whispered, keeping his eyes trained forward.

“Aces. Why do you ask?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Could have something to do with the pale skin and choppy breathing. Or maybe it’s the way you’re swaying on your feet.”

Crap.

She hadn’t thought it was so noticeable.

She caught the eye of one of her students who’d turned to talk to the boy next to him and motioned for him to be quiet and pay attention before she whispered back, barely moving her lips, “Occupational hazard. I’m fine.”

“Of course you are, but why don’t you have a seat before you fall over?”

Ali gritted her teeth. More than a little annoyed that he’d noticed. Annoyed that she felt like crap. Annoyed that he’d ordered her around. And annoyed that the pills were barely keeping her on her feet. “I said, I’m fine.”

“Whatever you say, Ali Cat.”

“Excuse me? Did you just call me an alley cat?”

When he didn’t respond, she glanced up at him and found him completely relaxed, calmly watching the firemen who began taking questions from the kids.

That only annoyed her further.

“You know, in polite society, people don’t go around pointing out how crappy someone else looks.”

“And, if you’d retract your claws a little, you’d realize I never said you looked crappy. I was simply asking if you were feeling okay.”

Double crap.

Ali closed her eyes.

He was right, and she was being a bitch again.

She had ninety more minutes before she could head home and quarantine herself—and her bitchiness—in a hot bath where she couldn’t infect anyone else.

But there was something she needed to do first.

“I’m sorry.”

“Accepted,” Kellen easily returned.

“No, not just for today,” she continued. “For last week in front of the diner. I was snippy that day, too, and you didn’t deserve it then any more than you deserve it now.”

“Has everyone been graced with your sunny demeanor lately, or am I just that lucky?”

She huffed out a surprised laugh. “You’ve been luckier than most.”

“Any particular reason?”

None that she was going to share. “Luck of the draw, I guess.”

“Fair enough.”

“And I appreciate your concern. Thank you for checking on me.”

See, I can be nice.

I am a big fan of Megan Erickson, she has written some seriously hot books. And to be honest I actually kept getting caught on the title so when it popped up on KU I grabbed it. Sadly the editing is terrible and driving me completely insane. I want to pull out a bright red pen and scribble all over my kindle screen while screaming.

As for the story, well so far so good. It's a little wordy and I would love them to get to the point a bit faster and the editing is not helping that as every page has three or four spare words. Grrr.

I am loving Lavin and as it's all told in his POV we are seriously getting to see how sweet he is. Bianca is still a bit of a mystery but I guess we will get there.

And now that I have actually finished the book I  can safely say the characters were good. The secondary characters would make for some great stories of their own (wink wink, nudge nudge) and the story was good. I am a bit upset because it should have been great. It had all the elements to make it great but it just missed it.

That said I absolutely would read on if this did become a series and I even volunteer to edit it. And to be fair I am sure a lot of people could overlook the things that annoyed me to really love this book. For me, in my picky, cranky pre period bitchiness where even my family avoid me it made me a little stabby. But meh it was free and I liked it so 3.5 stars.

What’s a girl to do after being ditched at the altar by text message? That’s right. Text. Message.

How does she pick up the pieces and move on? I’m no Dear Abby but here’s a little free advice…

Advice #1 – First, purge your apartment of all things him—by tossing his belongings off the balcony.

Advice #2 – Do not, I repeat do not, throw anything out into the hallway because you’ll injure your hot new neighbor.

Advice #3 – When said neighbor brings over Chinese Food do not let him stay and keep you company. It’s awkward when you realize he’s your boss.

Advice #4 – Accept his offer to help you with your side business but think twice before using a date to his sister’s wedding as collateral.

Advice #5 – Investigate who your mystery neighbor really is. Don’t trust his word even if he’s the world’s best kisser.

If you listen to nothing else, pay attention to that last one. It’s the most important and will save you a lot of heartache.

Xo,

Piper Rayne, or Piper and Rayne, whichever you prefer because we’re not one author, we’re two. Yep, you get two USA Today Bestselling authors for the price of one. Our goal is to bring you romance stories that have "Heartwarming Humor With a Side of Sizzle" (okay...you caught us, that's our tagline). A little about us... We both have kindle’s full of one-clickable books. We're both married to husbands who drive us to drink. We're both chauffeurs to our kids. Most of all, we love hot heroes and quirky heroines that make us laugh, and we hope you do, too.
