Billy Winston’s family is going to see him happy and in love if it’s the last thing they do.

Beard Necessities, the final standalone in the bestselling romantic comedy Winston Brothers series from New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Penny Reid, is available now!

20191008-BN.jpg

No one deserves a happily-ever-after quite as much as the second oldest Winston brother and his lady love, Claire McClure (aka Scarlet St. Claire). Cruelty and circumstance tore them apart almost twenty years ago. Secrecy and bitterness kept them separated.

But you know who's tired of their separation and stubbornness? Everyone. Especially Billy Winston’s family. And now they're going to do something about it.

Well-meaning interference means the star-crossed lovers can’t stop tripping over each other in the hills of Tuscany, the catacombs of Rome, and the waterways of Venice. Billy and Claire find themselves thrown together and at the mercy of the Winston siblings’ shenanigans.

But will their forced proximity bring them together? Or push them even further apart?

This second-chance romance brings back the entire Winston gang, playing cupid in one last story of love, hi-jinks, and family collusion.

BEARD NECESSITIES is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, and can be read as a stand-alone, but it’s probably best read after books 0.5, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the Winston Brothers series.

Strolling to the desk, I set down the milk and cookies, crossed my arms and turned to face my brother. “You’re pointing out that Scarlet and I will see each other during various family functions.”

“Correct.”

“And, therefore,” I continued reasonably, “I need to be nice to her.” I knew that already, and tonight—after watching her face crumple and feeling a part of my soul shrivel at the sight—I’d finally accepted it. I would be nice. I would be so damn nice. I’d be a saint.

But then Cletus said, “No, Billy. Not nice. Nice is for tea parties and doctor’s visits. You need to woo her.”

I blinked once. “Woo her.”

“That’s right. You need to woo the pants off her, hopefully literally, and then make that woman yours. Permanently. Once and for all. Put a ring on it. Woo is where it’s at. Jenn still has the centerpieces from our wedding if you’d like to borrow them.” During this enlightening monologue, he’d moseyed over and picked up the glass of milk and a cookie, dunked the cookie into the milk, and then took a bite just as he’d finished his listings of delusions.

“That’s never going to happen.”

“Why not? Those centerpieces are lovely. You don’t know your color scheme yet. Ask Scarlet before you decide.”

I ground my teeth. “Scarlet and I are never going to happen, Cletus.”

He shook his head firmly. “I’m disappointed in your lack of ambition, Billy. I thought we’d be on the same page. But I see now, I’m going to have to take a tough love approach.”

“Cletus—”

“I’m going to give you one chance,” he said, then pushed the rest of the cookie in his mouth and spoke around it as he continued, “One more chance is all you get. I’ve waited long enough for this and you know my feelings on delayed gratification.”

“Pardon?”

“It’s overrated.” He took a gulp of milk and picked up another cookie.

“No, Cletus. One chance on what?”

“I’m giving you one chance. One.” He pointed the cookie at me. “Tomorrow, you’re going to go find her, apologize to her for whatever that kerflufflefuck was I walked in on. Tell her you were suffering from temporary insanity, hopped up on illicit drugs, abducted by asshole probing aliens, whatever. I’m giving you one chance to make this right, and if you don’t take it, you are not going to like what happens next.”

I actually teared up reading the authors notes at the back of the book. I just can't believe it's over. I don't think I could ever be ready to say goodbye to my beloved Winston family so I guess it's lucky I can do a reread at any time. Although probably not too soon since this one was the hardest to read.

I found myself needing little breaks between some of the chapters to get my head around the injustices that Billy and Scarlet had to go through. Every single time something that had stood in their way was overcome there seemed to be another obstacle. And I think the hardest part was realising how many of them were created by Billy trying to protect Scarlet.

I admit I was as frustrated with Billy as much as I adored him. The depth of his love for Scarlet was beautiful but he took martyr to a whole new level. And my evil little soul wasn't really happy that they didn't get a whole load of revenge on a few people. But I guess like the saying, the best revenge is a life well lived and I did love that everything came full circle and the epilogue was perfect.

I just can't believe it's over. However I am eternally grateful that this story involved the entire family and we got to spend this last book with all of them.

I have had this book on my kindle for ages but I just couldn't bring myself to read it. The reviews I read and the authors warning had me well aware I was going to cry like a baby while I read it. Penny's writing is amazing so I knew I would love it but the origin story of Billy and Scarlet had to hurt.

Even though I waited until I was emotionally ready I couldn't have prepared myself. Especially since it is set when they are all still young and their mother is still alive. And even though through each of their stories I knew their part of why they were how they were living it in the moment was so much more emotional.

And I really didn't think about the life Scarlet had lived. But reading this book I broke for her, for Billy, for Cletus, for Jethro, for Bethany. Even while I was reading it laughing at the one liners Cletus threw out there. Or smiling at the absolute beauty of Scarlet inside and out. I was holding my breath waiting for the next punishment or twist in their story.

Those hits just kept coming. And each one felt harder and more devastating than the last. The only thing I am truly grateful for is the fact I have Beard Necessities ready to dive into because I have to know what happened next and get the happily ever after they both so desperately deserve.

“This is Penny Reid at her finest.” -- L.B. Dunbar, author

Beard With Me, an epic and breathtaking story from New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Penny Reid, is available now!

KDP_BWM.jpg

No one is better at surviving than Scarlet St. Claire and making the best out of circumstances beyond her control is Scarlet’s specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, she’d be the last person on earth, hermitting like a pro, singing along to her CD Walkman, and dancing like no one is watching.

Scarlet is clever, Scarlet is careful, and Scarlet is smart . . . except when it comes to Billy Winston.

No one is better at fighting than Billy Winston and raging against his circumstances—because nothing is beyond his control—is Billy’s specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, he’d be the first person on earth to lead others to safety, overcome catastrophe, or die trying.

Billy is fearless, Billy is disciplined, and Billy is honorable . . . except when it comes to Scarlet St. Claire.

‘Beard With Me’ is the origin story of Billy Winston and Scarlet St. Claire (aka Claire McClure) and is just the beginning of their epic love story.

*Scarlet*

“Do you want me to leave?”

Yes. That would be best, a wise voice said between my ears.

So of course I inhaled deeply and said as calmly as I could manage, “I thought we were going to go get firewood.”

“Okay. Good.”

“But then,” I blurted, flustered and irritated with myself for not speaking wisdom, “You should go. You can’t tell me carting firewood back and forth between your house and here is how you want to spend the last of your Thanksgiving weekend.”

“I didn’t say it was.” He began making his way up the incline.

“But you just said—”

“How about we make a deal.” Billy dropped the kindling next to my little woodpile, dusting his hands off on his pants. “I’ll cart the firewood, and you sing.”

“You want me to serenade you while we carry firewood?”

He smiled, slow and easy as he walked to me and reached out his hand. On autopilot, I accepted it and allowed him to help me up.

As soon as I was standing, his gaze moved from my hairline down to my nose, lips, and then chin, saying quietly, “I’ll take a serenade from you anytime.”

Thunk ka-thunk. That was my heart. It had been doing the thunk ka-thunk quite a lot around him. I ignored it, because what else could I do?

“And you’re not carrying the wood.” He tugged on my hand, pulling me out of my daze and past my tent.

“I will too carry wood.” Struggling to find my bearings, I stumbled after him. “I can carry logs just fine.”

“You’ll carry a log.” Billy fit his fingers between mine, pressing our palms together and grinning at me like he was waiting for me to argue and he couldn’t wait.

Snapping my mouth shut, I glared at him.

“Nothing to say?”

Maintaining my glare, I walked next to him. I wasn’t being led anywhere I didn’t wish to go. Not anymore. He wasn’t talking me into anything else.

“That’s an awfully mean look, Scarlet.” His grin grew, his brutally attractive eyes glowing happily as he peered down at me.

“Well, you deserve it. Always trying to tell me what I can and can’t do. I’m not arguing with you about this. I’m carrying as much wood as I want and you can take your stupid, chauvinistic opinions and shove them up your pretty-boy ass.”

Goodness. Where had that come from?

Billy’s steps faltered and his mouth fell open, his eyebrows rising high on his forehead. He stared at me, looking shocked as hell. And then in the next moment, he threw his head back and laughed. But he did not let go of me, instead bringing my knuckles to his chest as his deep, rumbly laughter filled the empty spaces between the trees, surrounding us.

Crushing me.

Yes. I was well and truly crushed as I could only watch Billy Winston laugh, desperately basking in the image of him so delighted and relaxed. I had the odd sense that his laughter also filled the empty spaces inside of me, the neglected, vacant rooms, and even a few places that felt brand-new, like he’d created them.

All that noble honesty he carried around like a boulder abruptly lifted, revealing him. Just him. Carefree and young and happy. Someone he might’ve been if his burdens hadn’t been so heavy, his responsibilities so broad.

It lasted only a minute, maybe two, maybe less, but I had the sense of being caught afterward. Billy’s laughter had receded, but he’d spun a web while I’d been staring at him, holding his hand.

His grin became smaller and he bit his bottom lip, his gaze dropped to my mouth. “You think I’m pretty?”

“You know you’re pretty,” I said, bizarrely out of breath, rattled, needing to anchor my focus to a tree beyond him and waging war against the heat climbing up my neck to my cheeks. Oddly, my eyes stung. I blinked.

His attention was still on me. I felt it, but I didn’t dare look at him. I couldn’t handle one of Billy Winston’s intense stares right now. He’d probably use my scattered wits to his advantage, talk me into something I shouldn’t want to do, and then I’d be kicking myself later.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice deep with concern, all trace of his earlier humor gone.

I huffed, trying half-heartedly to steal my hand back from him. He didn’t let it go, instead taking my tugging as a signal to step closer, filling my vision.

“Scarlet—”

“Are you ever going to teach me how to play the guitar?” I closed my eyes.

He didn’t answer right away, and I felt him hesitate, his mind work before he muttered, “It’s only been a week.”

A quality to his voice made me think he wasn’t answering the question I’d asked, but rather he was reminding himself that it had only been a week since we’d struck the deal.

Was that only last week? Why does it feel like so much has changed?

Then he said, “Don’t be angry.”

“I’m not angry.” I was muddled, my head and heart hurt, I was incredibly confused, but I wasn’t angry.

The air shifted and I felt him move closer. A second later, the fingers of his free hand were at my ear, tucking my hair behind it, his fingertips lingering at my neck, sending wave after wave of goose bumps every which way. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t swallow. I couldn’t think. Every nerve in my body strained toward him and I didn’t understand it. What is happening?

“Have you ever been kissed, Scarlet?”

About Penny Reid

SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing). By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.

Cletus has long since been one of my favourite Winston brothers so I was dying to get my hands on this book forever. So once it landed on my kindle I was all set and ready to go. This author and especially this series is of the rare breed that you know going in that you will not be disappointed, that you will laugh out loud and have sweet gentle moments mixed in and walk away feeling all light and fluffy and happy.

However this book had a bit more emotion than I was expecting. Which was such an amazing bonus I was thrilled with it. I had this idea of what I was getting before I started but I got so much more. I got the emotion but I also got the laugh out louds, I got the tears but I also got the stunned speechless. I honestly don’t know how Penny Reid does it but she crafts it so perfectly that it feels like I am living it right along with them.

Cletus was a little darker than I thought he was going to be. I knew he was a lot deeper than most people and his brain worked in it’s own unique way but I didn’t expect him to be such an evil genius under his good ole boy persona.

And the Banana Bread Queen was almost miraculous to watch come into her own and grow as a person. She is yet another character I had this semi formed opinion of that turned out to be way off. Jennifer was so sweet and caring and watching her fall in love with Cletus and the way that he loved her gave me the warm fuzzies in the best ways.

This series just keeps going from strength to strength and I can’t wait for the next installment of this awesome town and amazing family.

Sienna Diaz is everyone’s favorite “fat” funny lady. The movie studio executives can’t explain it, but her films are out-grossing all the fit and trim headliners and Hollywood’s most beautiful elite. The simple truth is, everyone loves plus-sized Sienna.
But she has a problem, she can’t read maps and her sense of direction is almost as bad as her comedic timing is stellar. Therefore, when Sienna’s latest starring role takes her to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park she finds herself continually lost while trying to navigate the backroads of Green Valley, Tennessee. Much to her consternation, Sienna’s most frequent savior is a ridiculously handsome, charming, and cheeky Park Ranger by the name of Jethro Winston. Sienna is accustomed to high levels of man-handsome, so it’s not Jethro’s chiseled features or his perfect physique that make Sienna stutter. It’s his southern charm. And gentlemanly manners. And habit of looking at her too long and too often. Sienna has successfully navigated the labyrinth of Hollywood heartthrobs. But can she traverse the tenuous trails of Tennessee without losing her head? Or worse, her heart?

Finally releasing her hand, Cletus noted conversationally, “If you come next Wednesday, I’ll let you try my sausage.”
I gathered a breath for patience and squeezed Sienna’s waist.
“Here we go,” Drew said as he swapped a knowing look with my sister.
Meanwhile, Beau rolled his eyes and released a disgusted snort. “Not this again.”
“Cletus’s famous sausage is famous,” Jess added helpfully, her eyebrows bouncing. She was already giggling.
Not missing a beat, Sienna asked, “How do you make it? Do you bake it?”
“No way. The heat isn’t right. In order for the sausage to mature, it needs the right type and application of heat. It needs heat on all sides, and wet heat is best.”
“You are the worst,” Billy said, though his mouth hitched on one side.
“This joke never gets old.” Jess was now laughing so hard she’d gripped her stomach, tears leaking from her eyes.
“It does when you have to hear it every month for ten years,” Duane complained, but couldn’t quite manage a scowl.
“My sausage is no joke.” Cletus frowned, wagging his finger through the air like we were all juveniles.
“So you grill it,” Sienna supplied, moving the conversation back on track.
“That’s right.”
“Good.” She nodded once, sounding thoughtful. “In that case, I insist you taste my thighs and breasts.”
These words, so calmly and earnestly spoken, rendered us all speechless.
Even Cletus.
I do believe we stared at Sienna in a collective state of paralyzed suspension, no one quite knowing how to react to her offer.
I felt her shoulders shake, so I shifted to the side, wanting to catch her expression. Her irresistible dimples flashed in full force and she giggled as she explained, “I have a great mojo chicken recipe. We can grill the chicken and sausage together.” Then to Cletus she said, “It’ll help with the wet heat.”
I looked to the heavens, hidden by the porch ceiling. “God, thank you for sending me this woman.”
Meanwhile, Cletus blinked once as though startled, but then a slow grin spread over his typically solemn features.
Beau, holding his hand over his heart, took the bait. “Sienna, I would be honored to taste your thighs and breasts.”
I shot him a warning glare. “Don’t you say that to her.” But I couldn’t keep my face straight either.
“What? What did I say?” Beau tried to sound and look affronted. “I was talking about her chicken. Obviously.”
Cletus’s grin had grown into an immense smile as his gaze moved over my woman with plain appreciation. “Well played, Ms. Diaz. Well played.”

I always get this rush of excitement whenever I open a Winston Brothers book. While I know it’s going to make me laugh I also know it’s going to be different.

Penny Reid has such a unique style, her books are unlike any others. Which is only a very small part of the reason I can’t wait to start reading her books as soon as I get them.
The characters are so quirky but in such a real way that I feel like they are old friends I can relax around. You know the friends I mean, the ones who know you fart.

Sienna was one of those people who was so comfortable being her you had to love her. And given how hilarious some of her thoughts were I wanted this book to never end so I could hang out in her head all day.

Jethro was probably the most complex of the Winston Brothers and to be honest I figured his friendship with Claire was going to play a huge part in his story. While I am not at all disappointed it didn’t however I do feel that aspect of the story was a little lacking. I hope we are going to see a lot more of Claire at a later date and get a little more closure on her story. Please penny.

But back to Sienna and Jethro. Only Penny could make two seemingly completely different people with two lives as dissimilar as these two not just gel but work beyond imagining. Sienna was absolutely the soft to his hard, the lightness to his seriousness and I loved it.

Now I just have to practice my patience while I wait for Cletus to get his story because as much as I loved Sienna and Jethro I fucking adored Cletus and I need a whole lot more of him. Please hurry Penny.

http://www.readersretreats.com/2015/11/truth-or-beard-winston-brothers-1-by.html

This is yet another case of why the hell did I wait so long to read this book? I mean seriously it has been on my kindle forever and I have wanted to read it for just as long but I kept getting side tracked. Then I had a bit of angst overload and picked it up and couldn’t put it down.

I really need to read more Penny Reid books. She has this way of making me cry, swoon and piss myself laughing all within a single page and I always find myself so invested in her characters I feel like I need to tell everyone how awesome they are.

I did read the blurb for this one and I thought I knew was I was getting and I kinda got what I expected, just not in the way I was thinking it would happen but I also got so much more.

Duane had moments of absolute alpha that had me wanting to wrap him up and take him home but sadly he also had moments of complete stupidity and bullshit male thinking that I really wanted to slap him. However when it counted he was perfect and the things that came out of his mouth were pure poetry.

I loved meeting the Winston brothers and although I probably shouldn’t admit it since we didn’t see nearly enough of them I do have my favourites and I can’t wait to get to their books.

And while Jessica was sweet I had moments when her attitude just drove me nuts. I mean don’t get me wrong I loved her and I really wanted them to get together and start popping out cute little babies. I just wanted her to pull her head out of her ass a little faster and get to the happily ever after she was fighting for.

So if you’re looking for a sweet, funny, feel good book with a touch of drama, a lot of action and some swoon worthy moments mixed in you have to read this book now.
