I hate when I screw myself over and only have myself to blame. New Maya Hughes book? Sign me up. Did I think to read the blurb first, or idk check if it's the first in a freaking trilogy? Seriously, how do I do this to myself? I can't wait for 2 more books? And early 2027? That's like next year. As in not able to start right now. But I'm so invested.

Lilah is such an amazing character. Her strength and determination make me feel like the biggest slacker. And I got her desperation to be accepted by her family so much I had to take a moment. I literally couldn't fault her for a second. She fell hard and fast and let it carry her but she never changed her goals or stopped being practical and so sweet. Gah I love her.

Mason can eat a bag of dicks. Sorry, not sorry. Don't get me wrong, I am 99% sure Maya is going to make me love him by the end of the trilogy. Assuming the wait doesn't kill me. But once we got an idea of what happened to their first beautiful summer I knew he was going to continue to be a stupid boy. And on top of that he was a coward. Ok, look I've sat back and thought about it and maybe that's a little harsh. I get it. He's young and he's in a really tough position but geez kid use your freaking words ffs.

Look, I know he had reasons. And a few of them were valid, very mature reasons for the things he did. He just kept screwing it up with his lack of using his big boy words and his spine being made of silly string. I also hate that the last little bit of cliff for us to dangle from is so not the 30 seconds to download the next book, I would have liked it to be. But for now I guess we will continue waiting. I hate waiting

Every Chance With You by Lexi Ryan is now live!

When I met Alec Hayes in Vegas, I thought I'd stumbled into a love affair with the man of my dreams. Alec's sexy, confident, and charming. Our night together was full of laughter and the kind of toe-curling kisses that tempted me to believe in fate for the first time in years.

Until I flew out to LA to surprise Alec and ran into the unnamed half-brother he'd admitted to despising.

But I know Oliver Rhett as soon as I see him.

Oliver's the reason I stopped believing in destiny. He was my first love and my first heartbreak. And now he's the reason I can't be with Alec.

It's not fair to give one man the scraps of my heart when Oliver would always be right there to remind me he still holds the rest.

But when Alec needs a favor, I can't turn my back on him. Even if it means falling a little more for his gentle charm every day. Even if it means facing Oliver and remembering exactly how brazenly he stole my heart.

My plan is to walk away. I can't make this family feud worse. But I didn't realize just how hard a broken heart can fall.

So, I absolutely love love love Lexi Ryan's writing and her Orchid Valley series has been awesome, but it's been soooo long between books. I honestly can't remember anything about the previous books, and I didn't read the blurb for this before I jumped in. Or any reviews or literally have any clue what I was getting into.

In fact, I picked it up this morning to read for a minute while the kids were playing nicely, and I've only just surfaced. I mean honestly, I am just speechless. I literally can't tell you a thing about the story because I loved that it kept me guessing. And the angst was just so perfectly balanced that I have no words.

I honestly feel like October is starting off as an absolutely blessed month for books. Everything I've picked up has been great. And this is just the absolute perfect example of what an amazingly talented author Lexi Ryan is. Just gah! How am I supposed to sleep now?

I seriously need to read things better. I saw the cover, I read half the blurb and I thought this was going to be one of those cute fun enemies to lovers books.

Man was I quick to realise that wasn't this book. Like prologue quick I was knee deep in all kinds of "oh shit" emotions. But I have had this on my KU forever and I had decided I had to check it off the list, so I pushed on.

I actually liked the story. I had a few face palm moments reading it when I wanted to slap a character, but they came around from the stupid pretty quick and made up for it well.

It really wasn't what I expected and it wasn't what I was wanting to read but I had to know when the other shoe was going to drop and whether it would be a stiletto or a bootie. So, I didn't put it down until I got to the end.

This is one of those times I really wish I didn't read the blurb for this after I had it on my kindle. Because I was so excited to get my hands on it as soon as I saw it, I didn't really worry about the blurb. I just knew it was Lavender's story and she was Violet and Alex's daughter and I NEEDED it.

Then I was gifted an ARC and I read the blurb and got scared I was going to ugly cry all over my kindle. So, I held off reading it. Until finally I couldn't hold out any longer and it ruined my ability to adult. Because although I didn't ugly cry I was a super emotional, overly invested mess who had to hide in my bed to prevent anyone talking to me while I waited for these two to get their shit together.

I vaguely remember Lavender being counselled by Queenie from an earlier book but I couldn't remember if there was a reason behind the fact she was wickedly shy and barely talked. As for Kodiak I didn't remember him, but I loved their childhood connection. Even if the subsequent separation was hard to understand.

And the way that Kodiak behaved towards Lavender made me want to neuter him with a rusty knife. Luckily we got duel POV and we got to see what was going on in both of their heads. Seeing all of the OG crew as parents was brilliant and I am so glad I got to read this book.

I have had this on my TBR for so long but knowing it's a duet that I would have to find time to devote to it I kept pushing it down. Because I knew it would wreck me and I wouldn't be able to put it down and adult while I was reading it. But then Jay decided to go and re-release it and put it all over Facebook I couldn't help myself.

I got to the last 15 percent at 2am last night and I KNEW I had to put it down to finish when I had more time. Because the angst of what was going to happen had me all tied in knots. I was so scared that one of them was going to do something to break my heart. And then I was going to cry, try write this review and then jump straight into book 2.

And as it turned out I'm glad I waited. Ava absolutely gutted me. Her strength, determination and perseverance made me love her so much. And Connor was truly beautiful too. The sheer volume of things against these guys made me want to wrap them up and hide them away.

But now I have to dive into book 2 because I need them both to be okay. But more I need them to thrive and live happily ever after because if anyone deserves it, it's them.

Blurb
Two years after the man she loved was killed in Afghanistan, Morgan Bartley is trying to put the pieces of her life back together. The reno on her dilapidated beach house in the Outer Banks might be just the distraction she needs to keep her debilitating anxiety attacks at bay and begin to heal her heart...if she can ignore the ridiculously handsome guy next door.

At twenty-eight, single-dad Jackson Montgomery’s life revolves around his five-year-old daughter and his job as a search-and-rescue pilot for the coast guard. He’s no stranger to saving a damsel in distress, and though his gorgeous new neighbor is clearly in distress, she’s no damsel. She’s stubborn as hell with walls a mile thick, and the dog tags hanging from her rearview mirror give him a pretty good clue as to why.

It doesn’t matter that their attraction is undeniable—she swore she’d never fall for another pilot, let alone a military man. There are some wounds time can’t heal, and some fears too consuming to conquer.

She’s a barely breathing heartbreak on the edge of recovery.

He’s a crash waiting to happen.

Together they could have it all...if they can endure the coming storm.

It feels like a lifetime ago that I picked up the first Flight and Glory series and fell in love with Rebecca Yarros's writing. And I have read every book as she has written them. She is right at the top of my one click authors list.  But for some weird, me, reason I wasn't able to read Hallowed Ground. It had been so long since I had read the first book and I felt like I would need to do a series re-read and I just haven't had the emotional fortitude or alone time to do it.

But when I found out this one was being released and I ascertained it could be read as a standalone I was all in. And a stay in a 5 star resort with no kids and a few cocktails absolutely helped. First I need to say that I adore Rebecca Yarros, I truly believe that there isn't another author who gives every word the weight she does. But oh my god does it take her long enough to write them. Seriously. Although, now I need to do a series re-read because I HAVE to read Hallowed Ground even though I am already destroyed from the events that occurred in it to form this one.

I guess for now I should actually address Morgan and Jackson and how absolute beautiful, painful, devastating and awe inspiring their story was. I am lying here at 4am after not having been able to put the book down from the second I started it. The book gave me all the feels and then some. I am still feeling Morgan's pain and the strength it took to put herself back together. Jackson was beyond perfect.

The whole story was amazing and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to read it when I could lie in bed sobbing like a baby with no distractions. And now I have to try get some sleep with a book hangover I'm going to be feeling for days. This book is one of my 2020 favourite reads but I highly recommend going in with a full box of tissues and an emotional support animal.

I knew this book was going to ruin me. Since the second I saw it I have been dying to read it but I knew it would kill me to read it so I held off until I had an opportunity to read it without distraction. And honestly, I can't remember the details of the previous books but I know I loved them to the depths of my soul. I also know they killed me.

So as soon as I picked up this book the prologue had me dying to know what was going to happen and how it was going to end. I was broken by both of these characters in so many paper cuts. They just kept slicing deeper and deeper into my heart.

I had ALL the feels. I was sitting with tears streaming down my face before giggling and smiling. Leo and Mia were written in the stars from their first meeting but damn did Jay run them through the wringer a time or twenty to get them through to their happily ever after.

I really wish I had done a reread of the previous books before I read this one but thankfully, I didn't need to. I feel like I'm in such a Preston family fog and I can't wait to get the next book in the series and I honestly don't care who's next because they all have their own story I'm dying to read.

Lexi Ryan has this ability to rip my heart out of my chest, stomp it into a million pieces, put it back and leave me smiling with tears running down my face. And the Jackson Harbor series has been nothing short of perfect.

This story was complicated and angsty and heartbreaking in all the ways only life can be. And while things were happening to make me cry it really would have helped to have someone to blame and I really wanted to be mad at Easton but then I would get his point of view and my heart broke all over again for him.

Everything was messy and nothing played out like I wanted but it was so real I couldn't help but love it. Shay was such a great character and I really wanted her to get the happily ever after she had been waiting her whole life for but watching her hit every bump with so much grace and understanding just made her perfect.

And as much as I loved Easton and Shay it was awesome to catch up with the brothers and their beautiful other halves. And I am so hoping that we are going to get another book in this series just to catch up with the crew because I could never get enough.

Now I have to try get out of this book coma and get back to real life. Because seriously that book has me so sucked in that I hardly slept and I picked it up as soon as the kids were dropped off at school. And my mind doesn't want to settle on anything but Jackson Harbor.

Ilsa is such an awesome writer, when it comes to new adult, sports romance she can't be beaten. She is one of those automatic one click authors and as soon as I saw this one I was so excited I jumped all over that sign up.

But when I first started reading this I was so nervous, I thought I knew where this was going to go and I didn't want it to. I should have had more faith but since I didn't I was so thankfully to be wrong. The anticipated drama still hit me in the feels.

This book was all about Sugar for me. She was so sweet and I really did love her. I wanted more for her from the very start. And since I am so vengeful I will admit that part of that could have been her ex crying in a corner with a broken nose or crushed testicles.

Zack wasn't bad but it took him way too long to pull his head out of his arse for my liking and when he did I would have liked to see a lot more grovel. But with that all said I did like him and I felt so bad for everything he went through. And seeing him man up and sort out all the different aspects of his life was great.

The epilogue was perfect and I am seriously hoping that the secondary characters will be getting their own stories as they were all so interesting.Overall this was a great read and I can't wait to one click the next Ilsa Madden Mills book no matter who it's about.

I absolutely love Lexi Ryan. She is a go to for books with a whole mess of emotion that also have such great chemistry and characters and stories that I get lost in them from the first page and then wander around in a bit of a fog for hours after closing the book.

The boys of Jackson Harbor has been such an awesome series and I have loved every one of them but when I picked this one up I only vaguely remember the last book. So I basically read this as a standalone and it still seriously worked for me. Although I am sure it would be even better if I had read it back to back with the other books.

I was so sucked in from the beginning trying to figure out everyone's secrets and then trying to figure out how they were going to be exposed. And I was so invested in both Teagan and Carter that I was dying to see it worked out perfectly for them both.

They were both going through so much that they really shouldn't have had to deal with alone. I just wanted to wrap them both up in big hugs and make it all better for them both.

And as much as I loved this book the hardest part is having to wait for the next one after the little tease I am assuming we got at girls night at the end of this one.

Don't you hate it when a book just totally tanks your ability to adult? I am having this constant dilemma of what to read next every time i put a book down. So today I decided rather than spend another 2 days trying to find a book to read i would read the oldest book on my current series shelf and that turned out to be one tiny lie.

I didn't read the blurb, I had no idea why i didn't read it five freaking years ago since I do know I enjoyed the first one. So I started reading and realised it was a love triangle and I have avoided them like the plague for ages. Well obviously for about five years.

But the writing was so good and I kinda liked Livie, even when I didn't. I got what motivated her and I felt a little broken for her. We all have things we know we shouldn't want. And it's even harder when there's no real valid reason not to choose the thing we think is right for us over that thing we actually want.

I did find it hard to get over the fact that she acted like such a selfish bitch when she knew her actions weren't just affecting herself. But then it's easy to rationalize things when you are living it, especially when your 18. And don't even get me started on Ash. I loved him as much as I hated him. He did my head in.

What is it about closed off brooding broken men that just works for me in books? But then here i am at 1am wide awake freaking out that the kids will be up in 5 hours being all needy and demanding while I am rocking a severe book hangover and trying to decide what I am going to read next.

So yeah I am glad I didn't read the blurb. I am glad I made myself read a book I remember having to wait for before I decided to read it later. Because this book has had my complete attention since I picked it up and i loved it, even when i knew i shouldn't.

I don’t know how I forgot the power of Katy Regnery’s words. Every single book of hers has been amazing and of course this one was no different. From their first meeting the connection between Laire and Erik was palpable and I could feel the chemistry leaping off the pages.

Firstly I have to say that if you aren’t a fan of insta love this isn’t the book for you so save yourself the money (unless you’re buying it for the charity then buy two and give one to a friend). Now of course I am a huge fan of insta love so this whole book was absolute perfection for me. And the insta love was told so beautifully and with so much depth of emotion I couldn’t stop turning the pages.

Laire and Erik weren’t just from different worlds it was almost like they were from a different time. And Katy told the book with so much detail and sensitivity it felt like I was visiting these places right along with the characters.

He’d never known anyone remotely like her, like this fisherman’s daughter from a world that was somehow frozen in time.

I fell in love with Erik from the first meeting. He wasn’t anything at all like I expected him to be, he was so much better than I could possibly dream and I loved that he fell in love so hard and was everything that Laire could need. He is absolutely on my book boyfriend list.

Laire was such a beautiful soul, I understood why Erik fell so hard for her and watching her fall right along with him was awesome. She was so sweet yet so kickass and strong. She went through so much and had to grow up so fast yet she still kept her sweetness and everything that was good about her.

This book was seriously amazing and you should absolutely one click it right now but be warned that you will need a box of tissues and once you pick it up you won’t physically be able to put it down so make sure you have the time to enjoy it.

Read my reviews for the other A Modern Fairytale Series Here

This is probably one of the hardest reviews I have had to write. I don’t even really know where to start.

First off I guess I should say I LOVE Sierra Hill. I was so enamoured by the first book in this series so I immediately started stalking her. Her writing is flawless and I connect with it so deeply I hang on every word so of course as soon as I got the opportunity to read this book I had to take it. However, it just so happened that while reading this book my husband and son were travelling interstate for our biggest basketball tournament so naturally this hit even closer to home than normal.

Now in the interest of not putting in any spoilers I am not going to go into any details about the story so I will simply try to explain my feels.

For the first half of this book I didn’t think I was going to be able to finish it. It hit so many of my hot buttons, it was told in alternating points of view with flashes to the past so it came out in bits and pieces as to what had happened and how it had been dealt with so I had all these ideas about what I thought had happened and who was to blame for how they had gotten to where they were at now.

Then as I got further into the story and watched it play out I found all my ideas were wrong but I still couldn’t shake a few of my issues. But I have to acknowledge they are MY issues. And despite the issues I still couldn’t put the book down. And I spent a hell of a lot of time in tears wanting everything to play out perfectly and end up all tied in a nice sweet little bow.

Which I kinda got but it didn’t happen how I thought it would and I really would have liked to see more of them together. The epilogue was awesome and I really loved it but I personally just wanted a whole heap more of the happily ever after, after living through all of the heartbreak they had gone through.

So how do I rate a book that had my stomach in knots and a sick taste in my mouth for half of the story, that had me cry like a baby and kept me flipping pages frantically? I don’t know how to separate the fact that parts of the theme were sensitive topics to me that made me uncomfortable. But on the other hand I loved the writing and I enjoyed the rest of the story. Honestly I think the story will stay with me for a while so I think maybe for now it’s a four star read. Maybe at another time it would be a three star and at yet another time a five star read so for today it’s a very solid 4.

Would I recommend it? Yes, but with warnings. Yes, it can be read as a stand-alone but since the first book is my favourite of the three I would highly recommend reading that one first. See my reviews for them here

http://www.readersretreats.com/2016/10/sweet-girl-sweetest-thing-2-by-sierra.html

Well that was just mean Lexi Ryan. I have been wanting to read this series every single time I see them but I keep putting it off cause damn does that blurb sound emotional and I have to be in the right mood to put myself through that. But the stars aligned this week and I just had to pick this up even knowing it was going to be an angsty read, I just really wasn’t expecting the amount of tears I shed while reading this book.

I also thought it was going to go in a lot different direction to the one it went in however I won’t tell you about that because it was so well written you have to take the journey yourself. And despite the fact I cried for most of the book it wasn’t one of those reads you walk away from feeling sad and heartbroken from. Infact I walked away with a huge smile wanting to rave about this awesome story and beautiful characters.

Mia was a character that I liked but I did go back and forth with her and I had a few moments I wanted to scream and pull my hair out but then we would get a little more of her story and I would see where she was coming from and I would feel nothing but love and sympathy for her. Everything she went through in this book would probably have broken me. But she was so forgiving and strong and I ended up loving her.

But not as much as I loved Arrow. Seriously that man owned me from the first. And although he did make a few stupid mistake and could (should) have handled things in a better way everything he did he did for the right reasons and with the best of intentions. And despite his mistakes he was a genuinely sweet guy who got dealt a really shitty hand.

I am so glad I picked this book up (finally) and I can’t wait to read the rest of this series, well you know next time I pull up my big girl panties enough.
